It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Michael Edward Wayland, a respected Chartered Accountant, trusted adviser, and an important figure in the history of our firm.

Michael passed away in June 2026, leaving behind a remarkable professional legacy and a lasting impact on the many people whose careers, businesses and lives he helped shape.

For those of us connected with Walker Wayland NSW, Michael’s name holds particular significance. Together with his father, Jack Wayland, Michael established the Chartered Accounting firm Wayland and Wayland. The practice earned a reputation for technical excellence, integrity, and practical advice delivered with genuine care for clients and their businesses.

In 1985, Wayland and Wayland merged with Walker Meares & Co to create what is today known as Walker Wayland NSW. That merger brought together two respected firms with a shared commitment to professional excellence and client service. The vision, values and entrepreneurial spirit that Michael then shared with his fellow partners remain part of the foundation upon which our firm continues to grow.

Michael was an accountant of exceptional breadth and capability. Throughout his career as a Chartered Accountant, he practiced specialisations as tax agent, auditor, insolvency practitioner and trusted business adviser. He possessed a rare ability to combine technical expertise with commercial judgement, helping clients navigate challenges, identify opportunities and make informed decisions with confidence.

Those who worked alongside Michael remember his sharp intellect, professionalism and unwavering commitment to achieving the best outcomes for clients. Whether advising business owners, assisting companies through periods of change, or providing assurance and taxation services, Michael brought diligence, integrity and practical wisdom to every engagement.

Beyond his technical achievements, Michael was deeply committed to the development of people. He generously shared his knowledge, mentored younger professionals and encouraged those around him to pursue excellence in their careers. Many accountants and advisers who crossed paths with Michael benefited from his guidance, encouragement and willingness to invest time in their professional growth.

After leaving Walker Wayland in the late 1980s to pursue opportunities in commercial accounting, Michael continued to build a distinguished career and later established his own successful practice. His contribution to the profession extended well beyond any single firm, reflecting a lifelong dedication to helping businesses and individuals succeed.

While Michael’s professional accomplishments were considerable, those who knew him best will remember that his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband to Susan, a loving father and grandfather, and someone who valued relationships above all else. His warmth, loyalty and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on friends, colleagues and clients alike.

The connection between Michael and Walker Wayland NSW endured throughout the years. Michael and Susan remained valued clients of the firm, and we were privileged to maintain that relationship across generations.

Reflecting on Michael’s legacy, Walker Wayland NSW Partner Scott Arnold shared:

“I joined Wayland & Wayland straight from high school in 1981 and today, as a Partner of Walker Wayland NSW I reflect on the positive contribution and the legacy Michael has provided me. As one of the young people fortunate enough to start their career under Michael’s leadership, I witnessed firsthand his commitment to clients, his technical excellence and his willingness to invest in the development of others. I remain grateful and acknowledge the contribution which Michael has provided throughout my professional career and in building the foundations of firm the I proudly represent today.”

As we reflect on Michael’s life and legacy, we recognise a man whose contribution helped shape the history of our firm and whose influence continues through the people he mentored, the businesses he advised and the profession he served with distinction.

On behalf of the partners and team at Walker Wayland NSW, we extend our sincere condolences to Susan, Sean, Camilla, their families and all who knew and loved Michael.

His contribution will not be forgotten.
