Businesses wishing to continue trading under a specific name need to register it as a business name with the ASIC. This can be done online through the ASIC website, provided the business has details of its ABN when the application is made. A business name is required for all businesses unless they are an individual trading under their own name only.

It is first necessary to use the ‘Check name availability’ search function to ensure the required name is available as businesses cannot trade under a name that is already registered by another.
Queries should be directed to ASIC on 1300 300 630 between 8.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Select the following options:
• 2 for running a Business
• 2 for Business Names, and
• 1 for Business Name Registrations.
Following a successful registration, ASIC will email a copy of the record of registration and the business name will appear on ABN Lookup on the same day.
Displaying business names
The business name must be displayed wherever the business is open to the public e.g. at a storefront, as well as with the ABN on any business correspondence issued by the business, including invoices or purchase orders.
